ABOUT NAACP MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE CHAPTER

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is a revolutionary, groundbreaking, and historic organization founded in 1909 to deconstruct suppressive and oppressive systems in the United States of America. The founders and leading civil advocates of the time met the urgency of injustices affecting the African American community and people of color across the country.

Medgar Wiley Evers, the namesake and founding principle of Medgar Evers College in the City University of New York (CUNY), served as the First Field Secretary for the Mississippi State Conference of NAACP Branches. He lived a life of purpose with faithful and selfless service at the forefront of his commitment. As the President of the Regional Council of Negro Leadership (RCNL) in Mississippi, Evers fought for the breaking of systemic oppression across the state of Mississippi; he led coalitions and developed strategic partnerships with national stakeholders and freedom fighters. Evers traveled across the region seeking to liberate and enlighten his community. Evers worked with renowned leaders of the time, such as the Hon. Thurgood Marshall, Hon. Martin Luther King Jr., Hon. James Baldwin, among innumerable catalysts for change throughout American history.

2831-B

The NAACP Medgar Evers College Chapter is nationally recognized as Unit 2831-B, and our members have served in a myriad of committees, such as the 88th State Convention Planning Committee, the Election Procedures Committee, and other committees of the New York State Conference of NAACP Branches.

The NAACP Medgar Evers College Chapter is a part of the New York State Conference of NAACP Branches. We belong to National Region 2, and we lead voter activation, education, and mobilization efforts on and off the Medgar Evers College campus in the City University of New York. The NAACP Medgar Evers College Chapter was initially founded in 2009, on the centennial year of the Association. After several years of community outreach and effective activism, our student population started working on the reactivation, reinforcement, and fortification of the chapter.

ACTIVATIONS

Our chapter members have successfully delivered voter registration and mobilization for the campus community. We have partnered with the NYC Commission of Human Rights, NAACP Brooklyn Branch, the Laundromat Project, the DoSomething Organization & DoSomething Strategic, and the Northeast Black Law Student Association (NEBLSA) Chapter at the CUNY Law School.

The founding principles of the Association are alive, and we carry a fire within to address the truth and to fight for the liberty of our community.
